WALT look after our environment.

Room 4 has been thinking about how we can help the environment and animal habitats, especially aquatic animals. We have learned that even if it is far away from the ocean, rubbish can still find its way there. We went out one afternoon and collected as much rubbish as we could find from around our school. We know that if everyone does a little bit to help the environment, we can make a big difference.

WALT create repeating and sequential patterns.

Room 4 have been learning about patterns during maths time. We have found out that there are two different types of patterns, repeating, where the patterns continues the same way, and sequential, where it gets bigger. After learning about these patterns and looking at some examples, we were able to explore patterns through different materials and made our own! It was a lot of fun!

WALT work with a buddy.

Room 4 has been lucky to have been able to work with our Year 4 buddy class, Room 16. They have been working on their inquiry topic, Volcanoes and wanted to share what they had learnt with us. We had fun making a paper volcano and learning some fun facts along the way!

WALT Explore and act on issues and questions that link our science learning to our daily living.

As a part of our inquiry topic, Under the Sea, Room 4 has been looking at the effects of human activity on aquatic animal habitats. We followed the story of 'Freddy the Fish' who was cut out of sponge and soaked up all of the different pollutants that we added to his home as the story went on. It was interesting for us to see all of the different ways that our actions affected Freddy's habitat. Even though we had fun adding all of the different 'pollutants', it made us feel sad to see how dirty Freddy's water had become.

This led us to think of how we could fix what we had done and decided to try to clean Freddy's water and home. We looked at making a water filter out of sand, gravel and coffee filters. We could definitely see a difference between the polluted and filtered water, but it was nowhere near as crystal clear as it had been before. It showed us that pollution is hard to reverse once it is done.

WALT write a cinquain poem.

Room 4 have been learning how to write cinquain poems. These poems don't rhyme, but have a special number of words per line. We used adjectives, which are describing words and verbs, which are action words.

Success criteria:
- Write the correct number of words per line.
- Use two adjectives.
- Use two verbs.

WALT discuss how blubber helps to keep Antarctic sea mammals warm.

LI: For students to extend their experiences and personal explanations of the natural world through exploration, play, asking questions, and discussing simple models.

WALT discuss how blubber helps to keep Antarctic sea mammals warm.

Room 4 recently had an 'Antarctica snow day' where we explored, discussed and took part in activities related to the southern most continent and its sea creatures. We set up a science experiment to find out how blubber keeps marine mammals warm in the cold waters of Antarctica.

First, we put our hands into some icy cold water to see what it would feel like.
Next, we used the 'blubber bag', or a double layered bag with vegetable shortening in between, like a glove when we put our hands in the water.
We found that it was much less cold to put our hands in with the 'blubber bag' and we hardly even felt the water at all!

I am Learning to Float on my Front.

Room 4 have been swimming three times each week and it has been lovely in the sunny weather! I have become much more comfortable in the water and have learned new skills. An important skill that I have learned is how to float on my front. I can do this with a boogie board. It is a great skill to have because it is fun to do and can help to keep me safe if I ever accidentally fall into water.

My next step is to be able to float on my front without a floatation device to help me.

Chinese New Year.

Room 4 celebrated Chinese New Year by making drums. First, we learned about the legend of the monster Nian who came out to terrorise villages at New Year. The people of China learned how to scare the monster away with loud noises and the colour red, like our noisy red drums!

Welcome to Year 2.

Welcome to Year 2!

We are very excited to be in Room 4 this year.
